3G - Glisson Going Green
Not only is Glisson developing Christ-centered leaders, we are teaching the importance of environmental stewardship as well. Camp Glisson continues to develop ways to be better stewards of the environment. Here are a few examples:
- For the last several years the Gold Rush chapter of Trout Unlimited has adopted Cane Creek for stream restoration. A few years ago they received the Embrace-A-Stream grant to support their efforts. Our goal is to repair Cane Creek from damage caused by construction runoff up stream. Steps are in place to control erosion, improve water clarity and control temperature. Our desire is to have native trout to be able to live and reproduce year-round. Visit www.tu.org to find out more.
- The lights for the sign on the main road pointing the way to Camp Glisson have been powered by solar energy for some time.
- Not only are we using solar power to light our signs, we are running an entire program on solar power. To learn more about the use of solar power at the Outpost, please visit the Outpost Gone Green page.
- We have installed compact florescent light bulbs throughout the camp to conserve energy.
- Within the next few months, we will be installing water-saving showerheads to help conserve water.
- We have partnered with the City of Dahlonega to reclaim 30 acres of wetlands on camp property. The wetlands provide a habitat for a variety of wildlife - including the indigo bunting, pictured below. In the future we hope to use the wetland area as an outdoor classroom for school groups.
- Leave No Trace (LNT) principles are taught at Camp Glisson. These principles build awareness and protection of nature during recreation activities in the wilderness. Please visit www.lnt.org to find out more.
- We currently recycle 100% of all the cardboard from our facility. This is equivalent to one full dumpster of card board each week.
- We are now setting up standard operating procedures to recycle and reduce other materials such as office paper, plastic and aluminum cans.
- Camp Glisson also has partnered with several recycling companies that pay us for each used cell phone or empty inkjet printer cartridge returned through our recycling partners. If you would like to help camp earn money through recycling, and also help keep these items out of our landfills, please click here for more information.
