Outpost Gone Green
Solar Power
Solar power has come to the Outpost! The popular Adventure Outpost program has been a camp favorite for the last few years. The Outpost is a rustic “base camp” for our campers who participate in multi-day adventure trips such fly fishing, mountain biking, rafting, climbing or kayaking. This base can house, equip and feed more than 70 people at a time! All meals at the Outpost are cooked over the fire on a wood burning stove and all lighting is by lantern. This type of program allows campers to slow down, be still and not be distracted from the power of God that is so evident in nature. Still, with the success and growth of this program has required us to add certain technologies – electric power. This power isn’t for cooking or lighting. This power is for refrigeration and freezer space. All of the power needed to keep our food cold will be from hot solar rays! Camp Glisson is now setting up a solar plant at the Outpost. Campers in the Outpost experience wilderness skills and Leave-No-Trace training. Now they have even more environmental stewardship training with the addition of the solar power plant. We will walk through with each of the campers the basics of how solar power works. We are very excited about this addition to our program! This will be the second project at camp that uses solar power. Presently there are no other Methodist Camps in the country who are using solar power to supply all the electrical needs for a program. We look forward to growing in this area.
